Adult Circumcision, Right Here in Calgary

There are a number of reasons why men may choose to get circumcised at an adult age. Some require circumcision as a cure for conditions like phimosis (an overly tight foreskin) while others choose circumcision for cosmetic and personal reasons. Whatever the reason for your choice to have circumcision later in life, we will be pleased to consult with you and schedule a surgery at your convenience.

With our skin glue closure method, in addition to the standard suture technique, we are able to obtain an improved cosmetic outcome without the typical multiple suture track marks in the skin. Adult circumcision procedures in our clinic offer optimal results with the least discomfort.

For more information, or to schedule to speak with our doctor, please contact us today. Appointments are generally available within a short time and no referral is required. Our experienced doctor specializes in circumcision for men of all ages so if you are planning to get yourself circumcised please let us consult with you and help you make an informed decision.

Getting Circumcised at Any Age

We are often asked; “Am I too old to get circumcised?” and the answer is almost invariably “no”. Men and teenagers routinely have the surgery in our adult circumcision clinic. You can also find additional information regarding circumcision for babies on a dedicated page on our site.

The most common age range for adult circumcision is 20 – 40 years old, but the procedure is regularly performed on a larger age range as requested for medical and personal reasons.

The medical team at our clinic are experts at circumcising men of all ages, and we have collectively performed over 100,000 procedures in our affiliated clinics across Canada.

The details below provide an overview of how your surgery will be performed and what to expect afterwards. You will receive detailed written instructions for post-surgery care as well as consult one-on-one with our doctor.

Our team is available after surgery as required to answer your questions and to react quickly in the unlikely event that there are any problems.

Before Adult Circumcision

The morning of your circumcision we recommend that you avoid coffee and other caffeinated beverages or stimulants. It is best if you are both physically and mentally calm.

Bring your headphones and listen to your favourite relaxing music on your phone or other small music player during the surgery.

Take it easy the night before

Do your best to have a good sleep the night before and follow your normal breakfast routine (except for minimizing coffee) so that you will feel your normal self. Some patients find it stressful to skip coffee and if you are one of those people who really need their coffee in the morning maybe just have one cup.

The goal is to minimize your stress, so have a cup of coffee if skipping it will cause distress. We recommend that the patient have someone come with them to drive them home as well. You will want to rest as much as possible on the day following your circumcision.

The Surgery

The procedure itself will take about 5 minutes once the penis has been anaesthetized. You will be kept for observation for 2-3 hours after surgery, with a private recovery room. Follow-up is required the next day and 3 days after the operation for dressing changes and check-up.

Adult Circumcision FAQ

The procedure itself usually takes about 15 minutes once the anesthetic has kicked in. Generally, plan to be in our office for about 1.5 hours.
We employ a highly effective local anesthetic to ensure you are numb prior to proceeding.
In all cases, the minimum length of time will be 6 weeks before the wound heals.
For those with an office job, you may return in 2-3 days. For those who work physical jobs, we suggest you rest for 5-7 days.
After your first week of taking it really easy you may resume regular activities as long as you are pain free, including sports or going to the gym. You should avoid any activity that puts pressure on the penis or scrotum for at least 3 weeks (biking etc.). No contact sports for 6 – 8 weeks.
You should not have sex or masturbate for 6 weeks after getting circumcised as an adult.

Most adult circumcision patients find that there is minimal pain post-operatively. Expect some mild discomfort after your procedure for a couple days just like with any surgery, after which there may be some discomfort during the first 2 weeks with nocturnal erections but they are generally mild and relieved with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

After the Procedure

Your penis may swell in the first 2 days. It is generally not very painful, and over-the- counter pain
relievers are all you usually need.

You will have a dressing over the head of your penis. Please follow the doctor’s directions about when to remove it.

Wear snug fitting underwear that provide good support. The underwear should hold the penis upright. This will help the swelling go down.

You can return to work and your normal routine when you feel ready to. Some men return to sedentary work as soon as 2 – 3 days after circumcision. You will need to wait longer before returning to physical work.

The information on this page gives you a general idea about how long it will take for you to recover, but each person recovers at a different pace. Follow the care instructions to heal as fast as possible.

Our doctor will address your specific case and your detailed questions.

Post-Procedure Support

If you need support following your procedure, you can contact us during office hours, and we will assist you immediately.

You may also walk into our office.

For after hours support, we are members of the Calgary West Central Primary Care Network (PCN). To access this service call Health Link @ 811. If needed they will connect you with the doctor on call or refer you to the PCN After Hours clinic for a same day or next day appointment. It is located at 5960 Centre Street SE

If the above options do not meet your needs, you may also proceed to any urgent care centre or emergency room.

Incision care

Remove any dressing when your doctor says it is okay. Do this by soaking it off in a warm bath. Wear underwear that is comfortable for you. Some men prefer a snug fit for support, while others prefer loose-fitting briefs. Do what feels best for you.

Medications after your circumcision

Your doctor will tell you if and when you can restart your medications. He will also give you instructions about taking any new medications.

If you take blood thinners, such as warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix), or aspirin, be sure to talk to your doctor. He or she will tell you if and when to start taking those medications again. Make sure that you understand exactly what your doctor wants you to do.

Take pain medications exactly as directed. If the doctor gave you a prescription medication for pain, take it as prescribed.

If you are not taking a prescription pain medication, ask your doctor if you can take an over-the-counter medication.

Do not take two or more pain medications at the same time unless the doctor told you to. Many pain medicines have acetaminophen, which is Tylenol. Too much acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be harmful.

If you think your pain medicine is making you sick to your stomach:

  • Take your medicine after meals (unless your doctor has told you not to).
  • Ask your doctor for a different pain medicine.

Post circumcision activity & care

Rest when you feel tired. Getting enough sleep will help you recover fast. You may shower when you no longer have a bandage on your penis. Pat the cut (incision) dry. You may also take short baths if you wish. Avoid strenuous activities, such as bicycle riding, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercise, for 4 weeks or until your doctor says it is okay. You can return to work and normal activities, including driving, when you are comfortable doing them.

What to eat after circumcision as an adult

You can eat your normal diet. If your stomach is upset, try bland, low-fat foods like plain rice, broiled chicken, toast, and yogurt. Drink plenty of fluids (unless your doctor tells you not to). There is no medical reason to change from your usual meals in the days after getting circumcised. You will likely prefer to eat at home at least for the first day or two to maximize your comfort.

Ice and elevation

Put ice or a cold pack on your groin for 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Try to do this every 1 to 2 hours for the first day. Put a thin cloth between the ice and your skin. Position your penis so that your underwear keeps it upright.

Sex after adult circumcision

Do not have intercourse or masturbate for 6 weeks, or until your doctor says it is okay.

An occasional erection is not harmful as long as you leave it alone. Do not stimulate the penis.
