Circumcision Surgery for Adult Men
Adult Circumcision is performed at the Intramed Medical Centre. No hospital visit or doctor’s referral is required. The procedure described here for adult men is essentially the same as provided for teenage boys. Our clinic offers circumcision for men with the virtually painless Pollock Technique™.
With our combination of local anaesthetic, our quick surgical technique, and our use of skin glue, we provide the most comfortable adult circumcision procedure available in Canada, or anywhere in the world.
Men also have the option of nitrous oxide sedation for maximum comfort and relaxation during the procedure.
- After receiving local anesthetic to the genital area, the circumcision is performed in a completely painless manner. The whole procedure is done in about 5 minutes.
- Patients are kept for observation for 2-3 hours post-operatively. You will have a private recovery room, including snacks and beverages supplied for your comfort.
- Follow-up is required the next day and 3 days after the operation for dressing changes, etc. Your doctor will be closely following your healing and recovery after circumcision as an adult.
- Somebody with a sedentary job can return to work within 48 hours. Surgery and follow-up visits are done in the comfort and privacy of Intramed Medical Centre. All supplies, dressings, analgesia, sick certificates, etc. are supplied by Intramed at no extra cost.
- You will have access to Dr. Crouse’s 24 hour phone to get quick answers any concerns that you may have.
Please go ahead and request a consultation appointment with Dr. Crouse if you are considering getting circumcised at an adult age. Our clinic is a leading resource for adult and teen circumcision in Alberta.
Adult Circumcision, Right Here in Calgary
There are a number of reasons why men may choose to get circumcised at an adult age. Some require circumcision as a cure for conditions like phimosis (an overly tight foreskin) while others choose circumcision for cosmetic and personal reasons. Whatever the reason for your choice to have circumcision later in life, we will be pleased to consult with you and schedule a surgery at your convenience.
With our skin glue closure method, in addition to the standard suture technique, we are able to obtain an improved cosmetic outcome without the typical multiple suture track marks in the skin. Adult circumcision procedures in our clinic offer optimal results with the least discomfort.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation is available for men who may be feeling anxious about the procedure. Nitrous sedation will increase relaxation without putting the patient to sleep, and it wears off quickly.

Getting Circumcised at Any Age
We are often asked; “Am I too old to get circumcised?” and the answer is almost invariably “no”. Men and teenagers routinely have the surgery in our adult circumcision clinic. You can also find additional information regarding circumcision for babies on a dedicated page on our site.
The most common age range for adult circumcision is 20 – 40 years old, but the procedure is regularly performed on a larger age range as requested for medical and personal reasons.
The medical team at our clinic are experts at circumcising men of all ages, and we have collectively performed over 100,000 procedures in our affiliated clinics across Canada.

Before Adult Circumcision
The morning of your circumcision we recommend that you avoid coffee and other caffeinated beverages or stimulants. It is best if you are both physically and mentally calm.
Bring your headphones and listen to your favourite relaxing music on your phone or other small music player during the surgery.
Take it easy the night before
Do your best to have a good sleep the night before and follow your normal breakfast routine (except for minimizing coffee) so that you will feel your normal self. Some patients find it stressful to skip coffee and if you are one of those people who really need their coffee in the morning maybe just have one cup.
The goal is to minimize your stress, so have a cup of coffee if skipping it will cause distress. We recommend that the patient have someone come with them to drive them home as well. You will want to rest as much as possible on the day following your circumcision.
The procedure itself will take about 5 minutes once the penis has been anaesthetized. You will be kept for observation for 2-3 hours after surgery, with a private recovery room. Follow-up is required the next day and 3 days after the operation for dressing changes and check-up.
Adult Circumcision FAQ
After the Procedure
Your penis may swell in the first 2 days. It is generally not very painful, and over-the- counter pain
relievers are all you usually need.
You will have a dressing over the head of your penis. Please follow the doctor’s directions about when to remove it.
Wear snug fitting underwear that provide good support. The underwear should hold the penis upright. This will help the swelling go down.
You can return to work and your normal routine when you feel ready to. Some men return to sedentary work as soon as 2 – 3 days after circumcision. You will need to wait longer before returning to physical work.
The information on this page gives you a general idea about how long it will take for you to recover, but each person recovers at a different pace. Follow the care instructions to heal as fast as possible.
Dr. Crouse will address your specific case and your detailed questions.
Post circumcision activity & care
Rest when you feel tired. Getting enough sleep will help you recover fast. You may shower when you no longer have a bandage on your penis. Pat the cut (incision) dry. You may also take short baths if you wish.
Avoid strenuous activities, such as bicycle riding, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercise, for 4 weeks or until your doctor says it is okay. You can return to work and normal activities, including driving, when you are comfortable doing them.
What to eat after circumcision as an adult
You can eat your normal diet. If your stomach is upset, try bland, low-fat foods like plain rice, broiled chicken, toast, and yogurt. Drink plenty of fluids (unless your doctor tells you not to).
There is no medical reason to change from your usual meals in the days after getting circumcised. You will likely prefer to eat at home at least for the first day or two to maximize your comfort.
Remove any dressing when your doctor says it is okay. Do this by soaking it off in a warm bath. Wear underwear that is comfortable for you. Some men prefer a snug fit for support, while others prefer loose-fitting briefs. Do what feels best for you.
Ice and elevation
Put ice or a cold pack on your groin for 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Try to do this every 1 to 2 hours for the first day. Put a thin cloth between the ice and your skin. Position your penis so that your underwear keeps it upright.
Medications after your circumcision
Your doctor will tell you if and when you can restart your medications. He will also give you instructions about taking any new medications.
If you take blood thinners, such as warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix), or aspirin, be sure to talk to your doctor. He or she will tell you if and when to start taking those medications again. Make sure that you understand exactly what your doctor wants you to do.
Take pain medications exactly as directed. If the doctor gave you a prescription medication for pain, take it as prescribed.
If you are not taking a prescription pain medication, ask your doctor if you can take an over-the-counter medication.
Do not take two or more pain medications at the same time unless the doctor told you to. Many pain medicines have acetaminophen, which is Tylenol. Too much acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be harmful.
If you think your pain medicine is making you sick to your stomach:
- Take your medicine after meals (unless your doctor has told you not to).
- Ask your doctor for a different pain medicine.
Sex after adult circumcision
Do not have intercourse or masturbate for 6 weeks, or until your doctor says it is okay.
An occasional erection is not harmful as long as you leave it alone. Do not stimulate the penis.
