You can request a circumcision appointment now for your son, or for yourself (in the case of an adult circumcision procedure).

Intramed provides circumcision for infants up to 4 months old, teens over 13 and men of all ages.

You do not need a referral from your family physician.

Preparing for the Procedure

We will speak with you to confirm on how to prepare for the circumcision. For infants we recommend feeding your son before leaving home and bringing along extra diapers.

We will also have you give him Tylenol before leaving home. This will be reviewed with you in detail, and you can read more about the steps before infant circumcision on the Infant Circumcision page.

Alberta Circumcision Costs

The cost of circumcision is not covered by Alberta Health and is paid privately. We are, therefore, able to serve patients from any province or country, and the pricing is the same for all.

No medical referral is necessary. You can contact us today with questions or to schedule a procedure.

Infant and Baby Circumcision Pricing

The fee for babies younger than two months of age is a fixed amount including all the aftercare supplies. As the baby’s age increases, the fee increases proportionately.

Getting your child circumcised at the youngest age is recommended for your baby.

Teen Circumcision Pricing

We perform Pollock Technique™ circumcision for teens 13 years and up. The cost will be determined primarily by the age of your teenager.

Please go ahead and contact us for a consultation to review your son’s situation and eventual cost for the circumcision procedure.

We recommend a consultation appointment as a first step because it is important to involve the teenage boy in the discussion and circumcision decision. Dr. Crouse will meet with parents and child to discuss options.

Adult Circumcision Procedure Pricing

Adult circumcision is routinely performed at Intramed Medical Centre.

The Pollock Technique™ is applied and your adult circumcision will be done under local anesthesia only and skin glue closure will be used to get the optimal cosmetic result.

What are the benefits and costs of circumcision?

Circumcision has been the topic of debate for many decades. Research and scientific studies indicate that there are a number of medical benefits that result from this procedure.

Circumcision benefits include the following:

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was reduced by 53% to 60%.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) was reduced by 28% to 34%.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) was reduced by 32% to 35%.
Among female partners of circumcised men, bacterial vaginosis was reduced by 40% and Trichomonas vaginalis infection was reduced by 48%. As many of these studies were done in developing countries, it is possible that the protective effects of circumcision may be lower in England.

Additional health benefits of circumcision include the following:

Lower risk of getting cancer of the penis, a rare type of cancer.
Lower risk of urinary tract infections during the first year of life. Urinary tract infections during the first year of life can be serious and may lead to hospitalization. An uncircumcised baby boy has a 1 in 100 chance of getting a urinary tract infection during the first year of life, compared with a 1 in 1000 chance for a circumcised baby boy.
Prevention of foreskin infections.
Prevention of phimosis, a painful condition in which the foreskin retracts. Circumcised males do not get this condition.
Easier genital hygiene.
Circumcision may reduce prostate cancer risk.

Because studies have indicated a link between circumcisions and improved health and lower incidence of serious, sometimes deadly diseases, demand for infant circumcision has increased.

Potential risks of circumcision :

Bleeding – in 1 in 500 circumcision there may be some bleeding that is usually stopped with pressure or less commonly with stitches. If there is a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia, then our doctors will need advice from a pediatric hematologist prior to proceeding.
Infection – there is always a possibility that there could be a generalized infection requiring antibiotics after the surgery (1/4000). Serious infections are rare (1/5000).
Concealed penis – when there is a good amount of fat around the penis (pubic fat), the penis may retract inward and increase the chances the penis gets partially buried and requiring medical intervention (1/800).
Meatal stenosis – this is a narrowing of the urethra that may occur after the procedure requiring medical intervention (1/1000).
Phimosis – this is a narrowing of the shaft skin opening over the head of the penis requiring medical intervention (1/500).
Trauma resulting in permanent damage to the head of the penis (never in our practice).
Suboptimal cosmetic result (1/500).
More serious complications including death (never in our practice).
