At our Calgary clinics, our doctors offer circumcision for infants up to 4 months of age, teens age 13 and up, as well as adult circumcision for men.
With our focus on circumcision procedures, we are able to deliver the highest standard of male medical care. Adult circumcision is also offered in our clinic (no hospital visit required) and you can find more detail on this service on a dedicated adult circumcision page on this website. For baby circumcision please click here.
If you are a minor teen (under 18) looking for information on circumcision please read on below, and understand that your parents will need to consent to any eventual procedure as well as be involved in the consultation appointment.

We are often asked about the optimal age for a boy’s circumcision and if, at a certain point, a child becomes too old to have it done.
If you have a newborn and plan to have him circumcised, we encourage you to book an appointment as soon as possible, as it is better to have the circumcision earlier in your child’s life. We perform circumcision on infants up to 4 months old.
The same virtually painless circumcision, using The Pollock Technique™, is available for adolescents aged 13 and up at our Calgary location. We also do circumcision for adult men.
Our clients include a wide range of ages, from infants to seniors, and Intramed is the only dedicated circumcision clinic in Calgary offering circumcision for teenagers as a routine procedure with the Pollock Technique™.
For this reason, many of our clients come from all over Southern Alberta and beyond to our Calgary clinic. Just let us know if you are travelling overnight for the surgery, and we can recommend local accommodation for you and your boy as needed.

Should your teenage son require circumcision, or if you are a youth seeking more information, we encourage you to explore more of the detail available on our website (and others) and to contact us for a consultation in our Calgary clinic when you are ready.
Before the circumcision operation, our doctor will explain the risks and benefits of the procedure.
Whether you’re planning to have your son circumcised or you’re pursuing circumcision for yourself, you will want to make a fully informed decision.
Please read about the Pollock Technique™ that we employ for all circumcisions at our clinic.
Our doctor is fully certified in the use of this virtually painless surgical method and has trained hands-on with Dr. Pollock in his Vancouver clinics.
Teenage circumcision is sometimes prescribed as treatment for phimosis and certain other conditions that may become problematic as the boy matures into puberty.
In these cases, the Pollock Technique™ circumcision is a good option when it has been determined that circumcision is the most effective treatment for a boy’s phimosis. We provide circumcision for teens who are at least 13 years old.
Whatever your reasons for contacting our clinic, our professional medical team is ready to assist you in achieving your personal objectives and resolving medical issues through circumcision safely and as comfortably as possible.
Though circumcision is usually done in the first few weeks after birth, we routinely perform circumcisions for teenagers, age 13 and older, at Intramed Medical Centre. No medical referral is required. Your primary care doctor may refer you to our clinic for circumcision for your boy but it’s not required. You can book an appointment online.
If you have questions regarding the appropriateness of circumcision for your son or any questions regarding specific details of the process at our clinic, you may choose to first book a consultation for your son before you schedule the circumcision appointment. To arrange a consultation with our doctors please book online.
There are some potential benefits from getting circumcised as a teenager.
Here are some examples:

This information will help you understand what you can expect and it will help you safely prepare for your child’s surgery.
The more you (and your son) understand exactly what is planned, the more comfortable you will be during the circumcision procedure and recovery period of several days.
Talk to your boy about the surgery. Tell your son that the surgery will remove the skin on the head of his penis. Explain the reasoning and write down any questions that need to be answered at the clinic.
Plan for your child’s recovery time. He may need more of your time right after the surgery, both for care and for comfort. Your child will probably be able to go back to school in a week or less. The presence of a parent is very helpful, especially in the first couple days of recovery.
We will remind you through email or text message 3 days before the circumcision appointment to confirm . Remember to follow your doctor’s instructions about your child taking or stopping medicines before surgery. This includes over-the-counter supplements or painkillers.
Have your child take a bath or shower before you come in. Teens may want to bring a book and a music player with some calm music.
A parent or legal guardian must accompany your child to the clinic. If both parents will not be present you will be asked to have written permission from the absent parent to confirm that they are aware of the planned operation and have agreed to have it done.
A local anesthetic is given by injection through the skin near the base of the penis. During a circumcision, the foreskin is removed from the head of the penis (glans). The surgery will take just a few minutes.
Even though the boy will be awake, there will be no pain while having the procedure done. It’s best if he can be distracted with music during the short surgery in order to minimize his stress.
After the procedure, some discomfort is expected when the local anesthetic wears off.
There are pain-killers that relieve any pain or discomfort and full post-operative care instructions will be given to you.
Take care to regulate the dosage and follow the doctor’s instructions.
The goal is to minimize your teen’s discomfort and promote healing. You will be shown how to reduce the risk of infection and informed of warning signs to watch for in case of any complications.
Our doctor will be available by phone after surgery and will respond quickly to questions or concerns.
Your son will require your attention in the days immediately after his circumcision.
You will likely be able to take your child home an hour or so after the surgery. Encourage extra rest the first day. Most teens can be more active on the day after surgery. Follow your doctor’s instructions about when your child can do vigorous exercise. This includes sports, running, and physical education.
When you leave the clinic, you will get more information about how to take care of your child at home. The doctor will tell you when your child can start normal activities again.
If you need support following your procedure, you can contact us during office hours, and we will assist you immediately.
You may also walk into our office.
For after hours support, we are members of the Calgary West Central Primary Care Network (PCN). To access this service call Health Link @ 811. If needed they will connect you with the doctor on call or refer you to the PCN After Hours clinic for a same day or next day appointment. It is located at 5960 Centre Street SE
If the above options do not meet your needs, you may also proceed to any urgent care centre or emergency room.
